There is some music that transcends time, the generation gap, and in this case, genres. Beating Up The Beatles is a jazz tribute to the iconic tunes of the Fab Four.
Charlee Watt is a name to remember. Youthful vitality, passion and a big voice are but a few characteristics that shine through during the show. The young South Australian performer hailing from Port Lincoln is an emerging force.
While many 19 year old’s have probably never heard of The Beatles, Charlee is interpreting, and presenting her own arrangements of iconic rock and roll tunes. Throw in the adaptations of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall and others and you have hit, after reimagined hit.
The magic of this show is more than Charlee’s incredible vocal abilities. Joining her on the stage are accomplished musicians David Goodwin, Christina Guala, Declan Horan and Lewis Todd.
Renditions of ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, and ‘Let it Be’ are amongst the tunes. Charlee’s favourite Beatles tune? George Harrison’s composition ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. It’s not currently featured in the show, but you just know that reinventing this song is not beyond her capabilities.
Whether you love The Beatles or you love jazz, this show should be on your radar. Whilst the short Adelaide Fringe season is now over, the show will be returning to Adelaide for the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe with shows at Carclew Ballroom on May 31st and June 1st.
