Final concert of Adelaide Baroque’s 2024 series: Bach and Handel at St Peter’s Cathedral

Join Adelaide Baroque for a spectacular finale featuring Bach and Handel at St Peter’s Cathedral on 16th of November, with renowned soloists and the Adelaide Baroque Orchestra.

Adelaide Baroque is set to close its 2024 Orchestral Series with a grand finale, featuring the music of two Baroque greats—Bach and Handel. The concert, taking place on Saturday, 16th of November at 7:30 pm in the magnificent St Peter’s Cathedral, promises to be a standout event for classical music enthusiasts.

The performance will include Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day (HWV 76) and Bach’s Cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (BWV 51), two of the most iconic works from the Baroque period. Soprano Jessica Dean and tenor Kyle Stegall will take centre stage as soloists, joined by renowned Baroque trumpet player Leanne Sullivan. The St Peter’s Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Anthony Hunt, will also perform, accompanied by the Adelaide Baroque Orchestra, led by Rachael Beesley.

The choice of Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day is especially fitting, as it celebrates the patron saint of music, St Cecilia, whose feast day is observed in late November. Handel’s piece is based on a poem by John Dryden and is known for its vibrant and joyful homage to the power of music. Bach’s Cantata BWV 51, with its dazzling trumpet and soprano parts, will no doubt soar in the cathedral’s stunning acoustics.

Adelaide Baroque has been a cornerstone of the city’s classical music scene since 1977, presenting innovative concert programmes to audiences in Adelaide and beyond. Over the years, the ensemble has earned a reputation for its dedication to historically informed performance and its commitment to training young Australian musicians.

In 2018, the ensemble launched the Adelaide Baroque Orchestra, which has since enjoyed widespread acclaim, with sell-out performances and enthusiastic audience responses.

With the upcoming Bach and Handel concert marking the final event in the 2024 series, it’s an unmissable opportunity to experience the powerful beauty of Baroque music in one of Adelaide’s most iconic venues.
