Experience the acclaimed opera Flight in Adelaide this May, as Scottish Opera brings humour, drama, and powerful music to Her Majesty's Theatre for an exclusive three-show season.

Get ready for Flight, one of the most popular operas today, now on sale.

With a powerful production that has never been seen before in the Southern Hemisphere, Flight returns to Adelaide nearly 20 years after its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Festival in 2006. This exclusive three-show season will be in Adelaide at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 8-10 May 2025.

This heartwarming production by Scottish Opera, directed by Australian Stephen Barlow, offers a captivating mix of drama, humour and beauty.

Set in an airport terminal during a fierce storm, Flight follows the lives of 10 stranded passengers, crew, and airport staff who must face their situations and one another.

Inspired by the true story that influenced Steven Spielberg’s film The Terminal, it focuses on a stateless refugee with a difficult story and the everyday people whose lives connect in this confined space.

Renowned composer Jonathan Dove teams up with librettist April de Angelis to create this touching and humorous opera, balancing comedy and tragedy. Dove’s skill in combining various musical styles ensures that Flight remains true to operatic tradition while also being accessible and engaging.

Dane Lam, Artistic Director of State Opera South Australia, says on the opera’s unique blend of humour and hardship. “Flight captures humanity at its most vulnerable, reminding us of our shared experiences. It beautifully combines comedy and emotion, and we’re excited to bring this timeless story to life in Adelaide.”

With Adelaide Airport as a key partner for Flight, State Opera Managing Director, Brenton Cox, highlights the relevance of the performance.

“As part of the airport community, we understand the complexities and feelings tied to travel, although we hope our customers never face a similar situation! We are lucky to witness extraordinary interactions between strangers and loved ones every day, and I love how this opera showcases resilience and the connections that can form unexpectedly,” Mr Cox says.

Featuring a talented cast, including countertenor James Laing, Anna Voshege, Samuel Dale Johnson, and Teddy Tahu Rhodes, the production highlights Dove’s storytelling through music and voice. British conductor, Charlotte Corderoy, leads the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
