Meet Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Jake Jagiello

Based at sportsmed’s Stepney Healthcare Hub, hip and knee surgeon Dr Jake Jagiello’s specialist interests include the treatment of arthritis and degenerative joint disease including hip and knee replacement surgery, cartilage injury, together with all aspects of revision surgery.

Other specialist interests for Dr Jagiello include bone and soft tissue sarcoma, together with metastatic cancer surgery.

We put the spotlight on Dr Jagiello to find out more about his work at sportsmed and his delivery of high standard care from consultation through to surgery and rehabilitation.

You were raised in London and Poland but now consider yourself a proud South Australian. What are your primary fields of speciality and what brought you to work in Orthopaedics in South Australia?

I’m an Orthopaedic Surgeon, and after completing my surgical training in Central London (plus a further two years in Sydney) and consulting there for over five years, it was my special interest in treating bone and metastatic tumours (cancers) that brought me here to South Australia.

I now primarily consult from sportsmed, where I treat patients needing primary and revision hip and knee joint replacements and complex limb salvage surgery. I offer anterior muscle sparing hip replacements and robotic surgery.

Additionally, I hold public positions at The Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), Flinders Medical Centre Hospital and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where I can continue to provide an expert level of care to cancer patients. These are positions I am fiercely proud of, and while the cancer work I do can be both challenging and rewarding, it gives me great meaning and satisfaction. Some of the youngest patients never cease to amaze us with their bravery, resilience and attitude.

Why did you choose to work at sportsmed?

Tell us about your health care philosophies.

My mantra is simple. I care about my patients, listen to their concerns and I try to address these professionally and on a human level.

To achieve the best patient outcomes, I believe it’s vital to build a strong rapport, not just by getting to know their orthopaedic problems but also the individual on a personal level. I try to instil confidence and trust in my patients by being conscientious and dedicated, but also by ensuring I am at the top of my game.

To achieve the best patient outcomes, I believe it’s vital to build a strong rapport.

I’m also passionate about helping to develop the next generation of surgeons, and work as Director of Training at the RAH where I’m actively involved in providing education and training to medical students pursuing a career in orthopaedics.

Can you give us a small insight into your life away from scrubs?
