Adelaide Festival announces first three shows for 2025

Get a first look at the 2025 Adelaide Festival program, running from 28th of February to 16th of March, with three highlight performances announced.

The 2025 Adelaide Festival is already generating excitement with the announcement of three standout performances: the opera Innocence by Australian director Simon Stone, Club Amour from the legendary German dance company Tanztheater Wuppertal, and the world premiere of A Quiet Language by Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) in celebration of its 60th anniversary.

Brett Sheehy AO, the Festival’s Artistic Director, highlighted the significance of these productions, noting their international acclaim and artistic excellence. He expressed gratitude to his predecessors for securing these shows, particularly praising Simon Stone’s work, which has captivated audiences globally since his breakout piece, The Cherry Orchard. Stone’s Innocence will make its exclusive Australian debut at the Festival, after successful runs in Europe and the U.S. The opera, set in Helsinki, explores the dark secrets that emerge during a wedding reception. The musical score, by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, will be performed by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, alongside an international cast.

Dance enthusiasts have much to anticipate with Club Amour, which marks the return of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal to Adelaide. This production unites Bausch’s iconic Café Müller with two works by Boris Charmatz, offering a powerful exploration of love and desire.

Finally, ADT’s A Quiet Language promises to be a highlight of the Festival, blending the company’s pioneering spirit with contemporary themes. Artistic Director Daniel Riley describes the piece as a reflection on the company’s rich history and its connection to culture and country, particularly on Kaurna land.
