The artworks are now on free display to the public at Encore Village, retirement living and aged services provider ECH’s vertical retirement village in Modbury. The Encore is open to the public 11am – 2pm every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week throughout the SALA Festival, until the 31st of August.
Each of the original artworks were created by one of the more than 10 retirees who attend the village’s art group, led by ECH team member Pat Wundersitz.
The exhibition explores how art can enrich our lives and deepen our understanding of the world, with diverse perspectives, emotions and interpretations. Varying members of Encore Village’s art group will be on site at the exhibition to discuss their works with attendees and demonstration how their paintings were created.
Encore Village resident Joan has been painting for more than a decade and has some of her artwork on exhibit. She originally started art as a means of therapy, however, has grown to enjoy the many benefits it brings.
“It helps with many medical conditions as well as socialising for the lonely and elderly who cannot participate in more active pursuits,” Joan says. “I certainly recommend it.
The Encore exhibition was officially opened by Glenda, also a village resident and art group participant.
Glenda first studied fine art in 1978. Since then, she has explored several mediums and also holds workshops and demonstrates silk painting, watercolour and pastel painting to various art and community clubs across South Australia. Gum trees, water reflections, light on the landscape, old buildings and flowers inspire Glenda to paint.
Encore Village’s art group meets once per week in the village’s community space, where they work on their independent projects and participate in structured sessions to learn and hone their artistic skills and techniques, under the stewardship of Pat.
