Adelaide Fringe: Kyle Dolan – Please Hello

A man wearing glasses and a plaid shirt holds a microphone, appearing engaged in a speaking or performance activity.
Kyle Dolan seems a bit young to be so nostalgic, but nostalgia isn’t what it used to be, and he’s sweetly funny anyway.

Taking to the stage with some audience participation tricks to get us in the mood, Kyle then began discussing various unsettling subjects, including unemployment, classroom trauma, and mocking Scottish kids with Shrek jokes. And yet, despite some darkness, he was bright and witty, and even got laughs when he pointed out how the punters hadn’t laughed at certain gags (got that?)

More audience participation came along when Kyle had us offer stories about good (and not so good) school experiences, and then there were a few rather elaborate zingers about movies, with assorted giggles concerning Godzilla, La La Land, Psycho, Midnight Cowboy, and Christopher Walken.

And yes, you can’t help but like any show that features a cool Christopher Walken joke.

Hello again…

Kyle Dolan – Please Hello is on at the Howling Owl during Adelaide Fringe until Saturday, 22 March. Get tickets here.
