Expect a clash of ideas as two teams of local experts and personalities debate thought-provoking topics, including: “What is the greatest value of a collection to the collector?” and “Is it better to keep a hoard together or share it?” The evening will offer a mix of insight and passion as the panelists weigh in on the complexities of history, ownership, and preservation.
This is also the perfect time to explore Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard, one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the century, on display outside of Britain for the very first time. The exhibition features more than 100 rare Viking Age artefacts, many of which have been hidden away for more than a thousand years. Among the treasures are silver arm rings, intricate brooches, and striking beads — all showcasing the wealth and artistry of the Vikings.
Clare Mockler, Acting Director of the South Australian Museum, says: “The Great Debate will delve into the wider implications of collecting and hoarding, sparking conversations about their impact on both society and history.”
Tickets include a welcome drink and full access to the Treasures of the Viking Age exhibition. The debate will take place in the museum’s Pacific Cultures Gallery on the Mezzanine level, with a chance for guests to explore the artefacts during an intermission.
This debate is just one highlight of a six-month program celebrating the exhibition, which will culminate in Vikingfest on 28–29 June.
