On The Terrace 2024: Where music and culture meet

Enjoy a free day of live chamber music and culture at On The Terrace 2024, with over 40 pop-up concerts across Adelaide's iconic galleries and museums.

On Sunday, 3rd of November, Chamber Music Adelaide invites you to experience a unique celebration of live music and culture with On The Terrace 2024. From 11am to 4pm, North Terrace will come alive with over 40 intimate pop-up concerts across some of Adelaide’s most iconic galleries and museums. This free event welcomes everyone and offers a diverse mix of chamber music, perfect for all ages.

Audiences can look forward to a wide range of performances, including the Stringybark Quartet at the South Australian Museum, where they will debut the world premiere of Becky Llewellyn’s new composition, Barossa Girl. Also at the museum, the Windsong Quintet, joined by baritone Emlyn O’Regan and percussionist Andrew Wiering, will perform Jodie O’Regan’s moving piece Elegy For A Grieving Ocean.

At the Art Gallery of South Australia, Soundstream will explore the concept of “Breath” through a collaborative performance by Mark Cauvin and Gabriella Smart. In the same venue, Various People Ensemble will perform Anne Cawrse’s She Who Knows Strange Songs, a compelling song cycle inspired by the words of female poets. The Kegelstatt Ensemble will also perform at the Art Gallery, presenting Erwin Schulhoff’s Concertino for Flute, Viola and Double Bass, which reflects the post-World War I adjustments captured in the gallery’s ‘Rethinking Australian Art’ exhibition.

The State Library of South Australia will host Zemzemeh, a trio weaving together traditional Persian music with contemporary influences. The Silk Strings Ensemble will take the audience on a journey through Chinese folk songs, while the Adelaide Baroque Duo will showcase European compositions from the 18th century.

At the Migration Museum, Lawrence Mooka-Neliman will share music inspired by his Torres Strait Islander roots, while Poco Tutti, a choir that brings together disabled and non-disabled singers, will deliver a heartfelt performance celebrating community and inclusion.

Additionally, audiences can enjoy a special collaboration between Arabana songwriter Nathan May and improvising violinist Julian Ferraretto at the Art Gallery, where they will explore Nathan’s songs in new ways. For families, the Musical Masterpieces workshop at the Art Gallery offers children the chance to create their own music, inspired by the gallery’s artwork.

Emerging talent will also be on display, with the Emerging Artists Showcase, presented in partnership with Recitals Australia, featuring up-and-coming musicians performing at the State Library and the South Australian Museum.

On The Terrace 2024 is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of chamber music and artistry in Adelaide. With performances across multiple venues, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, making it a perfect day out with friends and family.
