This modern masterpiece by Jonathan Dove is soaring into Adelaide for a strictly limited season from May 8–10, 2025, and it’s the perfect introduction to opera for first-timers while offering plenty for seasoned fans to love.
Flight is based on an extraordinary true story. The same one that inspired Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal. A stateless refugee is stranded in an airport, unable to prove his identity, while passengers, crew, and airport staff deal with their own personal dramas during a long, stormy night. It’s a story of human connection, resilience, and hope, simultaneously blending humour and heartache in a way that feels deeply relevant today.

This acclaimed production, coming straight from the UK, features an outstanding cast, including countertenor James Laing as the Refugee, a role he has performed to critical acclaim across Europe. Australian soprano Anna Voshege’s stratospheric high notes will have you on the edge of the seat as she embodies the role of the Flight Controller in charge of a terminal spiralling out of control. Not to mention the rest of the cast, Nina Korbe, Henry Choo, Cherie Boogaart, Ashlyn Timms, Samuel Dale Johnson, Jeremy Tatchell, Fiona McArdle, and renowned bass-baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes in a special cameo. The production is directed by Stephen Barlow and conducted by Charlotte Corderoy, leading the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Flight turns a modern-day airport into a vibrant snapshot of human experience. Called ‘witty brilliance’ by The Guardian and ‘first class entertainment’ by Bachtrack, this production features a stunning score that will stick with you long after the curtain falls.
Still unsure? Here’s the best part: Flight is performed in English, making it one of the most accessible operas to jump into, while experiencing all the grandeur this artform embeds.
