Where to raise a glass on NYE

Still no plans for New Year's Eve? There's still time to celebrate in style, from gin and whisky bars to Southeast Asian gastro wine bars. Here are just five of Adelaide's finest.

1. Malt & Juniper

The doors to this intimate gin and whisky bar located on one of Adelaide’s iconic laneways are open from 4pm! On Malt & Juniper’s (pictured at top) carefully curated menu are holiday spritzes, negronis, wines, margaritas, and everything in between.

Guests can also enjoy small plates, designed to complement the flavours of the spirits, from delicate charcuterie to rich cheese boards.

Paying homage to classic cocktail bars of yesteryear, Malt and Juniper is moody, slightly modernist and bit botanical. Lighting is low, booths are soft and the back bar stretches high (bartenders need a ladder!). What’s more, the gin and whisky lists run long of local gin distillers and national and international labels.

There’s no planned NYE event, meaning if you wanted to head here on the 31st, you can still try your luck at the door before the clock strikes midnight!

Find Malt & Juniper at 18 Peel Street, Adelaide.

2. Makan

Other than the food, there are a few reasons to ring in the New Year at this Southeast Asian gem. Open from 4pm till 10pm, this new Flinders Street establishment is perfect for pre-event dining or post-fireworks drinks! Best of all? There’s still time to book!

Bringing the vibrant flavours of Southeast Asia to Adelaide, Makan is a fresh and exciting wine bar that draws inspiration from the bustling streets of Malaysia and Indonesia. The name Makan, meaning ‘to eat’, perfectly captures the essence of the venue—offering not only an exceptional selection of local, small-batch Adelaide wines but also rare finds from around the globe that are hard to come by elsewhere.

The food menu is a celebration of shared plates, with delicacies such as squid, oysters, mussels, gyoza, and bao. For those with a more substantial appetite, heartier options like crispy chicken and grilled fish are sure to satisfy.

What’s more, all bookings receive a free glass of sparkling on arrival. This New Year’s pick is for those who want to eat and enjoy, but be back in bed by at least 10.30pm.

Find Makan at Level 1, 116 Flinders Street.

3. Hains and Co.

Ring in the New Year in topical tiki madness! For just $30, you’ll gain exclusive entry to Hains and Co’s Tiki Central from 8pm, complete with a welcoming lei and a glass of bubbles, of course.

Hains and Co’s expert bartenders will be serving up vibrant tiki cocktails and crisp G&Ts, while DJ Tim Bos and live saxophone create an upbeat atmosphere with island beats and smooth grooves. If you’ve got a ‘dad-on-vacation’ shirt in your wardrobe, now’s the time to wear it.
