Active Ageing Week is a national campaign with the vision for all Australians to live active, healthy and engaged lives at any age, and focus on building capacity for All Age Friendly policies, cultures and practices across diverse sectors and communities.
ECH is celebrating Active Ageing Week (along with International Day for Older Persons on October 1 and Ageism Awareness Day on October 7) by hosting a range of come and try events designed to encourage older people to get physically active and socially connected for a healthier wellbeing. Activities include golf, Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, mindfulness garden meditation and much more.
ECH Chief Executive Claire Scapinello says engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a nutritious diet, fostering social connections, and prioritising your wellbeing can contribute to a fulfilling and active life.
“Physical activity not only keeps the body in shape but also has profound benefits for mental health,” Ms Scapinello says.
“Regular exercise not only improves mood, reduces stress, and boosts energy levels, but also enhances cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, and lowers the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, it’s an excellent way to socialise, fostering connections and support networks.
“This Active Ageing Week is the perfect opportunity to find new ways to get involved, so make a conscious effort to prioritise physical activity – your body and mind will thank you for it, and enjoy the lifelong benefits of a more active lifestyle.”
Research indicates that adopting a health-conscious lifestyle from an earlier age significantly enhances the likelihood of maintaining good health in later years.
While socialising with friends and engaging in communal activities can invigorate your life, the activities coordinated for you during Active Ageing Week are a perfect opportunity to reconsider, try and pursue aspirations that may have been previously deferred due to time constraints earlier in life.
Activities during Active Ageing Week are facilitated by experienced ECH staff and are suitable for people of varying levels of mobility.
