Food on the Table has announced the return of its fifth annual Soup & Sleep—a community-driven event aimed at tackling food insecurity and homelessness across the state.
This year, thanks to the support of major sponsor Credit Union SA, the initiative is expanding like never before. For the first time, South Australians are encouraged to take part from their homes, offices, or community spaces, allowing even more people to engage with the event and its life-changing mission.
Taking place on Thursday, 5 June at Food on the Table’s headquarters in Hindmarsh, Soup & Sleep brings together chefs, businesses, and community members to raise funds and awareness for those doing it tough.

The event invites participants to cook alongside iconic South Australian chefs, helping prepare nutritious meals that will be distributed to vulnerable people throughout the state. Guests will also enjoy live entertainment from generous local performers and hear moving personal stories from individuals who have experienced homelessness and overcome adversity.
But it doesn’t end with dinner. As the name suggests, participants are invited to sleep outside, with nothing more than a piece of cardboard for shelter—an act of solidarity that offers a small glimpse into the nightly reality of thousands of South Australians.
Importantly, the initiative now includes the opportunity for families, schools, and workplaces to host their own version of the event—making it not only more accessible but also a chance to spark important conversations across generations.
“To hear the numbers of people experiencing homelessness in our state every night is alarming, so many of us take for granted the simple basics of nourishing food on a table and a safe home to sleep in,” says Todd Roberts, CEO of Credit Union SA.
Last year alone, Food on the Table delivered more than 90,000 meals to South Australians facing homelessness, family violence, and food insecurity. Each week, the organisation continues to provide more than 2,500 meals to charities, emergency shelters, and crisis centres around Adelaide.
“Just $2 is all it takes to provide a healthy, nourishing meal to someone who’s hungry and experiencing food insecurity,” says Food on the Table CEO, Rikki Cooke.
Food on the Table’s Soup & Sleep event is held at 2 Chief Street, Hindmarch on Thursday, 5 June 2025. To register, support, or donate, visit soupandsleep.org.au
